Gideon Isaiah Gartner

The Tel Aviv-born entrepreneur and analyst who transformed how organizations research, evaluate, and buy information technology

Gideon Isaiah Gartner (March 13, 1935–December 12, 2020) was a Jewish American engineer, technology analyst, entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist best known for founding the research and advisory company Gartner. His larger achievement, however, was not simply the creation of a successful firm. He helped establish information technology analysis as an independent, systematic profession capable of influencing the decisions of corporate executives, government agencies, technology vendors, and investors.

Gartner recognized early that reliable knowledge about technology was becoming essential infrastructure in its own right. He developed a model that joined engineering insight, market research, financial analysis, and concise communication. Rather than relying on lengthy technical studies or accepting vendors' accounts of their own products, the firms he built sought to provide comparative, independent, and actionable judgments. That model became one of the foundations of the modern technology research and advisory industry.

From Tel Aviv to an American technology education

Gartner was born in Tel Aviv during the British Mandate to Jewish parents who had emigrated from Eastern Europe. His father, Abraham, was an engineer, while his mother, Pnina, née Bedri, was a musician and teacher. The family moved to the United States in 1938 and settled in Brooklyn, where Abraham worked as a civil engineer for New York City.

Gideon attended the Yeshiva of Flatbush and later Midwood High School, graduating in 1952. He showed exceptional musical ability as a pianist and French horn player and was offered a music scholarship by the University of Miami. He ultimately chose engineering instead, earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956 and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management in 1960.

That combination of engineering and management became central to his career. Gartner learned to view technology not only as machinery and software but also as a force that reshaped budgets, institutions, competitive markets, and the work of executives.

Early systems work and a professional return to Israel

Gartner began his career in operations research at System Development Corporation, a Philco subcontractor. He worked in New Jersey on a control system for the United States Strategic Air Command and later in Virginia for a communications agency within the Department of Defense. These assignments placed him at the intersection of computing, systems planning, and complex institutional needs.

In 1961, after Philco sold a large transistorized computer to Israel's Ministry of Defense, the company sent Gartner to Israel. His Hebrew and local background made him well suited to assist Israeli programmers and introduce Philco's systems to other government agencies. The assignment formed an early professional bridge between the rapidly developing American computer industry and the technological needs of the young State of Israel.

While in Israel, Gartner was recruited by IBM. He led a systems engineering staff serving emerging markets in Europe and the Middle East, then moved to IBM's offices in White Plains, New York. There he became manager of market information in the Data Processing Division and a prominent participant in the company's commercial analysis operation. His years at IBM taught him how a major technology company gathered intelligence, managed sales, and translated engineering advances into business strategy.

Bringing technology analysis to Wall Street

Gartner left IBM in 1969 to establish Computer Decisions, a publishing venture devoted to developments in the computer industry. The business struggled during the 1969–1970 recession and was sold. The setback nevertheless reinforced an idea that would guide his later ventures: there was real demand for current technology intelligence, but it had to be delivered in a useful form and supported by a durable business model.

In 1970, despite lacking a conventional securities-analysis background, Gartner joined E. F. Hutton to cover IBM and the growing computer industry. He moved to Oppenheimer & Co. in 1972, eventually becoming a vice president, head of its technology group, and a partner. From 1972 through 1977, Institutional Investor ranked him the leading individual technology analyst on Wall Street in its annual survey of major institutional investors.

Gartner also changed how analysts communicated. He divided extensive research into shorter, focused pieces, emphasized practical conclusions, and used charts and recorded audio to get information to clients quickly. Frequent brief updates supplemented his larger reports. The purpose was to close the gap between broad financial generalizations and highly technical material that many investors and executives could not readily use.

He became known for attempting long-range judgments about the direction of computing. Among his forecasts were detailed descriptions of the capabilities and challenges of mass-produced personal computers before the PC became an everyday product. In 1977, an exhibition sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery, Goldman Sachs, and the Boston Computer Museum recognized him among the information technology industry's notable communicators.

Founding Gartner and building a new profession

By the late 1970s, Gartner had concluded that research developed for investors could serve a much wider audience. Computer manufacturers needed competitive intelligence, while chief information officers and other institutional buyers had to choose among costly and rapidly changing systems. Government agencies, consultants, and large companies all needed ways to assess price, performance, obsolescence, and risk.

In 1979, Gartner and industry veteran David L. Stein established Gartner Group, later known as Gartner, Inc. Gartner served as chairman and chief executive until April 1991. Whereas many research firms of the period primarily sold information to technology vendors, Gartner Group also served enterprise users, institutional investors, government bodies, and consulting firms.

This broad client base created a productive network of information. Vendor knowledge helped reveal where the industry was heading, while enterprise clients exposed the practical difficulties of buying and operating technology. The company addressed competitive analysis, the residual value and obsolescence of computer equipment, methods for controlling IT costs, and education for client technology staffs.

Research designed to support decisions

Gartner expected analysts to write concisely, take defensible positions, and explain why their findings mattered. The firm's documented research process called for analysts to scan many sources, identify patterns, develop new ideas from those patterns, and record their conclusions in brief research notes. In intensive meetings, researchers presented the reasoning behind their judgments and defended it before their colleagues.

The company also recruited experienced industry professionals who could engage clients as peers, rather than relying exclusively on young generalist researchers. It built inquiry systems that connected clients directly with analysts and developed major professional gatherings, particularly its Symposium. These practices turned research from a static publication into an ongoing service and community of expertise.

A business model built for growth

Gartner Group was initially financed by Bessemer Venture Partners and E. M. Warburg Pincus, with Bank Paribas joining later. The investment enabled the company to construct a national sales organization and market renewable annual contracts. Gartner introduced a measurement and compensation system focused on changes in contract value, rather than merely rewarding revenue already secured through renewals. It encouraged expansion while keeping attention on whether clients continued to value the service.

The company appeared among the fastest-growing private businesses in the United States before going public in 1986. Saatchi & Saatchi acquired it in 1988, with Gartner remaining chairman and chief executive through April 1991. In 1990, he led a leveraged buyout financed by Information Partners, a private equity fund owned by Bain Capital and Dun & Bradstreet.

SoundView and Giga: extending the research model

Gartner's entrepreneurial work did not end with the company bearing his name. Drawing on his Wall Street relationships, he initiated a technology-focused financial service distributed through Dillon, Read & Co. The operation became an independent broker-dealer called Gartner Securities in 1984 and was separated from Gartner Group before the latter's public offering. Renamed SoundView Technology Group in 1988, it combined technology research with Wall Street methods of institutional distribution and client service. SoundView later merged with Wit Capital and was acquired by Charles Schwab in 2004.

In 1995, Gartner founded Giga Information Group and raised more than $15 million to develop it. He served as chairman and chief executive until late 1999. Giga sought to simplify technology advice by offering one comprehensive advisory service, supplementing its staff analysts with a network of outside experts, and giving clients online research tools through a service called the Knowledge Salon.

From its first service delivery in April 1996 to December 1999, Giga grew from no revenue to an annualized rate exceeding $65 million and more than 1,200 enterprise clients. It went public in 1998 and was acquired by Forrester Research in 2003. Although Gartner Group, SoundView, and Giga served different markets, all three reflected Gartner's central conviction: specialized knowledge becomes more valuable when it is organized, challenged, communicated clearly, and placed directly in the hands of decision-makers.

Teaching, investment, and a lifelong commitment to music

Gartner shared his experience beyond the companies he founded. He spoke to graduate students at institutions including Harvard Business School, MIT, and Yale, and in 1985 taught at UCLA's Graduate School of Management. He wrote about technology, management, and electronic commerce and later invested in early-stage companies as an angel investor, including through New York Angels.

Music remained an important part of his life. He continued to play piano and French horn and had performed with the London School Symphony Orchestra and the ensemble then known as the Brooklyn Philharmonia. He later served cultural institutions including the Opera Orchestra of New York and the Aspen Music Festival and School. He was also associated with the Aspen Institute and arts organizations in the Aspen community.

His service to academic and computing-history organizations included work with the MIT Corporation's Library Committee, the Society for Information Management, the Charles Babbage Institute, and the IT History Society. The Charles Babbage Institute at the University of Minnesota preserves an extensive collection of records from Gartner Group, Giga, and SoundView, giving historians a documentary basis for studying the development of the technology advisory business.

Personal life and final years

Gartner had three children with his first wife, Janet Sussman, and later married Sarah Schweitzer. Sussman was one of the inspirations for the character Jenny in Erich Segal's novel and film Love Story; Segal had known Gartner and Sussman during their college years. Gartner lived at various times in Stamford, Connecticut, and Aspen, Colorado. He died at his New York home on December 12, 2020, at age 85, from complications of Alzheimer's disease.
