Hedy Lamarr

The Vienna-born Hollywood star and inventor whose wartime collaboration with George Antheil anticipated important developments in spread-spectrum communication (November 9, 1914–January 19, 2000)

Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-born American film star and self-taught inventor whose life joined two worlds that her era rarely imagined in the same woman: the glamour of Hollywood and the practical imagination of an engineering workshop. On screen, she became one of the defining faces of American cinema in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Away from the camera, she worked with composer George Antheil on a radio-control system designed to hop among frequencies so that an enemy would find it harder to jam.

Their patented system was not deployed during World War II, nor was it the sole origin of the wireless technologies that followed. It was, however, a significant early contribution to the history of frequency-hopping and spread-spectrum communication. Related principles later became important in secure, interference-resistant wireless systems. Bluetooth uses frequency hopping, while early Wi-Fi and GPS employ other forms of spread-spectrum signaling. That distinction strengthens rather than diminishes Lamarr's achievement: her legacy rests on a documented and technically imaginative wartime invention, not on the overstated claim that she single-handedly invented the modern wireless world.

A Vienna childhood and Jewish family roots

She was born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna, then the capital of Austria-Hungary, the only child of Emil and Gertrud “Trude” Kiesler. Her father, a bank executive, came from a Galician Jewish family with roots in Lemberg, now Lviv in Ukraine. Her mother, a pianist born in Budapest, came from an affluent Hungarian Jewish family and converted to Catholicism, raising her daughter as a Christian. Lamarr's background therefore belonged to the complex Jewish and assimilated culture of Central Europe, even though her personal religious life cannot be reduced to a simple label.

Her father encouraged her fascination with the way things worked. On walks through Vienna, he explained machines, printing presses, streetcars, and other systems to her. She learned to look beneath the surface of an object and imagine its mechanism. At the same time, she was captivated by theater and film. That combination of visual imagination, mechanical curiosity, and confidence in unconventional ideas remained central to her life.

From European cinema to Hollywood

As a teenager, Kiesler pursued acting in Vienna and found work in the Central European film industry. After small parts, she gained international attention in the 1933 Czechoslovak film Ecstasy. The film was admired for its visual style and became notorious for nudity and sexual expression that were unusually explicit for the period. The publicity followed Lamarr for years and often obscured both the range of her screen work and her later technical achievement.

In 1933 she married Friedrich Mandl, a wealthy Austrian arms manufacturer and dealer with ties to fascist governments in Europe. Through the business and social world surrounding him, she encountered conversations about weapons, military systems, control mechanisms, and communications. The marriage restricted her acting career, and in 1937 she left Mandl and Austria. Accounts differ on the precise details of her escape, but she made her way to Paris and then London, where she met MGM chief Louis B. Mayer.

Mayer signed her to a studio contract and, with a suggestion from his wife, gave her the screen name Hedy Lamarr in tribute to silent-film actress Barbara La Marr. Lamarr's major American debut opposite Charles Boyer in Algiers in 1938 made her a sensation. MGM promoted her beauty, mystery, and European sophistication. That image made her famous, but it also repeatedly confined her to roles as an exotic, glamorous outsider rather than giving her the dramatic range she sought.

A major film career—and a bid for creative control

Lamarr appeared with many of the leading actors of her generation. In Boom Town in 1940, she joined Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, and Claudette Colbert. She played a Viennese refugee opposite James Stewart in Come Live with Me, and appeared with Judy Garland and Lana Turner in the successful Ziegfeld Girl. Films such as Comrade X, Crossroads, and White Cargo confirmed her box-office appeal, even as their marketing often placed her appearance above her abilities as a performer.

Her greatest commercial success came as Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille's biblical epic Samson and Delilah, released in 1949 and the highest-grossing film in the United States in 1950. Starring opposite Victor Mature, Lamarr helped turn the story from the Book of Judges into one of classic Hollywood's most widely seen biblical spectacles. The production won two Academy Awards and made her portrayal of Delilah an enduring screen image.

Lamarr also sought influence behind the camera. After leaving MGM, she formed a production company with Jack Chertok and helped make The Strange Woman in 1946 and Dishonored Lady in 1947, starring in both. At a time when women had little authority over major American film production, her attempt to initiate and shape her own projects was unusual. In 1954 she produced and starred in the ambitious Loves of Three Queens, playing several historical women. The film failed to secure broad distribution and caused heavy financial losses, but the project demonstrated her determination to move beyond the roles studios selected for her.

Her final film was The Female Animal in 1958. Two years later, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contribution to motion pictures.

The “Secret Communication System”

During her Hollywood years, Lamarr regularly devoted her spare time to inventions. She had no formal engineering degree, but she read, sketched, devised mechanisms, and sought technical advice. Her other ideas included an improved traffic signal and a tablet intended to dissolve in water to make a carbonated drink. Her most consequential work began early in World War II through her friendship with George Antheil, a composer and pianist known for experimentation with synchronized mechanical music.

A radio-controlled torpedo could be sent off course if an enemy detected and jammed the frequency carrying its guidance signal. Lamarr proposed that the transmitter and receiver switch together among numerous frequencies according to a shared pattern, making the signal much more difficult to block. Antheil connected the idea with his experience coordinating player pianos. Together they envisioned synchronized perforated rolls that would control frequency changes at both ends of the transmission, much as matching piano rolls could keep mechanical instruments in time.

Lamarr and Antheil submitted their proposal to the National Inventors Council in late 1940, obtained engineering advice, and worked with patent attorneys to formalize it. On August 11, 1942, they received U.S. Patent 2,292,387 for a Secret Communication System. It was issued to Hedy Kiesler Markey—Lamarr's legal name at the time—and George Antheil.

The U.S. Navy did not adopt their design for wartime torpedoes. Its proposed mechanical implementation was difficult to fit into the military equipment of the period, and Lamarr and Antheil did not develop it beyond the patent stage. Operational systems using related principles emerged years later, after the patent had expired, so the inventors received no royalties from the idea.

Serving the war effort in public

The patent's rejection did not end Lamarr's wartime contribution. She was encouraged to use her fame on behalf of the war effort and took part in public campaigns to sell war bonds. Her service therefore operated on two levels: she offered a technical proposal intended to protect Allied communications, and she used her celebrity to mobilize financial support. This work had particular historical resonance for an émigré from Austria whose family roots were Jewish and whose native Central Europe had fallen under Nazi domination.

Recognition after decades of neglect

For much of her life, Lamarr was remembered chiefly as a glamorous actress. Wider recognition of her place in communications history arrived only in the 1990s. In 1997, the Electronic Frontier Foundation presented Lamarr and Antheil with its Pioneer Award for their contribution to spread-spectrum technology. That year she also became the first woman to receive the BULBIE Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award. In 1998, the Austrian Association of Patent Holders and Inventors honored her with its Viktor Kaplan Medal.

In 2014, fourteen years after her death, Lamarr was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for her work on frequency-hopping spread spectrum. The honor did not retroactively make her the developer of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or GPS. Rather, it located her patent within the longer history of methods that enable signals to resist interference, use radio spectrum more effectively, and support secure wireless communication.

Her name has since entered public and scientific memory. Vienna named a street for her, and in 2014 the remainder of her ashes was placed in an honorary grave at the city's Central Cemetery. Asteroid 32730 Lamarr was named in her honor. The Jewish Museum Vienna explored her dual identity as screen star and inventor in its exhibition Lady Bluetooth. The 2017 documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story introduced new audiences to her recorded voice, technical work, and struggle to be understood as more than an image.

Lamarr became a naturalized United States citizen in 1953. She died of heart disease at her home in Casselberry, Florida, on January 19, 2000, at the age of 85. In accordance with her wishes, her son Anthony scattered part of her ashes in the Vienna Woods; the remainder was later interred in the city of her birth.
