Yuli Edelstein

Yuli Edelstein is an Israeli politician and former Prisoner of Zion who served for years as speaker of the Knesset.

Influence and contribution

In the Soviet Union, Edelstein taught Hebrew clandestinely and was imprisoned after seeking to immigrate to Israel. Following his release and aliyah, he entered public life, held ministerial portfolios and became one of the longest-serving speakers of the Knesset.

Legacy and significance

Few biographies connect the struggle for Soviet Jewish freedom so directly with the institutions of Israeli democracy. Edelstein's journey from refusenik to parliamentary leadership gives his story clear historical and civic value.
