Larry Page and Sergey Brin: The Founders of Google
Lawrence "Larry" Page, born on March 26, 1973, is a Jewish-American computer scientist and entrepreneur. Page, along with Sergey Brin, co-founded Google and served as the CEO of its parent company, Alphabet, until he was succeeded by Sundar Pichai on December 4, 2019. Sergey Mikhailovich Brin, born on August 21, 1973, is a Jewish-American computer scientist and entrepreneur born in the Soviet Union. Brin co-founded Google alongside Larry Page and served as the President of Alphabet until December 3, 2019.
Larry Page
Larry Page's father, Carl Victor Page, was a professor of computer science and artificial intelligence at the University of Michigan. His mother, Gloria, is a computer programming lecturer at the University of Michigan. His maternal grandfather immigrated to Israel. Page attended East Lansing High School and graduated with honors from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in computer engineering. He later moved to Stanford University, where he completed his master's degree.
In March 1995, Page and Brin crossed paths during a prospective doctoral candidates' gathering in computer science at Stanford University. Page, who had been in the program for two years, was chosen to give a tour of the campus to prospective students, including Brin. Their friendship grew from there.
Around the same time, Page conceived the idea for "BackRub," a web crawler that would analyze the relationships between websites by crawling through millions of interconnected documents. The complexity and scale of this idea intrigued Brin, and they decided to work on it together. According to Brin, "I talked to a number of groups at Stanford. This was the most exciting project, both because it tackled the enormous problem of web search, and because I liked Larry."
To turn the links that BackRub provided into a measure of a web page's importance, Brin and Page developed the PageRank algorithm. Its purpose was to create a better search engine than any other available at the time by analyzing the relevance of backward links connecting one web page to another. In August 1996, the first version of Google was made available, initially only on Stanford University's website.
In 1998, Page and Brin founded Google. Page served as Google's co-president alongside Brin until 2001 when they hired Eric Schmidt as CEO. The three of them led Google as a triumvirate until April 4, 2011, when Page replaced Schmidt as CEO, and Schmidt became the Executive Chairman.
Personal Life
Larry Page married Lucinda Southworth in 2007 in a ceremony on Richard Branson's private Caribbean island. Southworth is a research scientist and the sister of model and actress Carrie Southworth. The couple has two children.
Sergey Brin
Sergey Mikhailovich Brin was born in the Soviet Union on August 21, 1973, and moved to the United States with his parents at the age of six. He earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Maryland. Like his father and grandfather, Brin chose to study mathematics as an undergraduate. He completed his second degree in computer science. After receiving his degree, Brin went on to study for a third degree in computer science at Stanford University.
At Stanford, Brin met Larry Page, who would become not only his academic collaborator but also a close friend. They filled their dorm rooms with inexpensive computers and used them to implement Brin's idea for a superior search engine. This software, named BackRub, gained popularity at Stanford, and Brin and Page decided to work on it together.
To improve BackRub's ability to rank web pages by importance, Brin and Page developed the PageRank algorithm, which analyzed the relevance of backward links between web pages. In August 1996, the first version of Google became available, initially only on Stanford University's website.
In 1998, Brin and Page founded Google, with Page serving as co-president alongside Brin until 2001 when they hired Eric Schmidt as CEO. The three of them led Google as a triumvirate until April 4, 2011, when Page replaced Schmidt as CEO, and Schmidt became the Executive Chairman.
As of November 2021, Sergey Brin's estimated net worth exceeded $122 billion.
