Dov Moran

Israeli inventor, entrepreneur, and flash-memory pioneer whose work helped make the USB drive an everyday tool around the world

Dov Moran (born July 29, 1955) is an Israeli electrical engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, venture-capital investor, author, and lecturer. He is best known for the development of the DiskOnKey USB flash drive and for founding M-Systems, a pioneer in flash-based data storage. Under his leadership, the company grew from an Israeli technology venture into a global business with annual sales of about $1 billion before its acquisition by SanDisk for approximately $1.55 billion.

Moran’s significance extends beyond a single successful device. His work helped move flash memory out of specialized systems and into the daily lives of computer users. After selling M-Systems, he continued to launch companies, explore new hardware concepts, and invest in young Israeli ventures. His career links invention with institution-building: he developed products, assembled companies around them, and then used the knowledge he had gained to support another generation of engineers and founders.

From Ramat Gan to electrical engineering

Moran was born in Ramat Gan as Dov Mintz, the younger of two children. His parents, Baruch Mintz and Bina Gever, were Polish-born Holocaust survivors who rebuilt their lives in Israel. His father came from Krosno, while his mother’s family escaped from Błonie. Moran’s path would become part of a larger Israeli story: the son of survivors educated in the young state who went on to help build one of the industries most closely identified with modern Israel.

He was drawn to electronics as a child, ordering components and digital-watch parts and trying to construct devices of his own. At 16, he attended a computer course at Tel Aviv University and wrote his first program in an era when programming still involved marked cards. He studied at Ohel Shem High School and later graduated with honors in electrical and computer engineering from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.

Moran served for seven years in the Israeli Navy, where his responsibilities included commanding its microprocessor section. The role gave him practical experience with computing systems and the management of a technical team while microprocessor technology was still relatively young. Before founding his own business, he worked as an independent consultant in Israel’s computer industry.

M-Systems and the flash-memory transformation

In 1989, Moran founded M-Systems and served as its chief executive and chairman. The company addressed a central computing challenge: how to store information in a durable, compact, portable form without the moving parts used in magnetic drives. M-Systems became a pioneer in the commercial application of flash memory, developing storage products for computers, mobile devices, and embedded systems.

The two products most closely associated with Moran and the company’s engineering teams were DiskOnChip, a flash-storage component designed for integration into devices, and DiskOnKey, a small memory device that connected through a computer’s USB port. Before cloud storage became commonplace, the DiskOnKey offered an unusually simple answer to an everyday problem. Files could be carried in a pocket and moved between computers without relying on floppy disks, recordable discs, or bulky external drives.

M-Systems’ achievement combined engineering, product design, and global market development. The company reported sales of about $45 million in 2001; by 2006, sales had reached roughly $1 billion. In August 2006, flash-memory manufacturer SanDisk acquired M-Systems in a transaction valued at about $1.55 billion. The sale demonstrated both the commercial value of the technology and the ability of an Israeli company to compete at the center of the international data-storage industry.

New inventions and new companies

After the sale of M-Systems, Moran founded Modu in 2007. The company sought to rethink the physical design of the mobile phone by creating a small core device that could be placed inside different enclosures and accessories. The concept anticipated a more modular approach to consumer hardware. One Modu handset, weighing 40.1 grams, received a Guinness World Record as the world’s lightest mobile phone.

Modu did not continue as an independent company, and its patent portfolio was sold to Google in 2011 for 17 million shekels. The acquired technology and concepts were subsequently associated with Google’s Project Ara, an effort to develop a modular smartphone. Google discontinued the project in 2016, but the episode showed how an idea developed by a small Israeli company could inform experiments at one of the world’s largest technology businesses. Former Modu employees also went on to establish numerous technology ventures of their own.

Other products and companies with which Moran has been involved include:

  • Smartype, a keyboard with an integrated display, developed through KeyView, which Moran founded with Uri Brison.
  • Comigo, founded in 2011 to develop hardware and software for interactive television experiences.
  • Mobile and embedded storage technologies, including flash components and communications products created at M-Systems.

Moran has reported involvement in more than 40 patents and patent applications. Taken together, they reflect a sustained interest in infrastructure technologies: storage, mobile hardware, human-machine interfaces, and systems that connect physical devices with software.

Leadership in Israeli technology companies

In addition to leading his own ventures, Moran served as chairman of Tower Semiconductor, an Israeli developer and manufacturer of semiconductors and integrated circuits. During his tenure, the company advanced through a turnaround and reached operating profitability. The position placed him inside one of technology’s most demanding and capital-intensive fields: semiconductor manufacturing.

He also served as chairman of Biomas, a pharmaceutical-development company. His work across semiconductors, communications, digital health, and medical technology reflects a view of technology not as an isolated sector, but as a foundation for addressing problems in many areas of human life.

Investing in the next generation

After several years as an angel investor, Moran co-founded the Israeli venture-capital firm Grove Ventures in 2015. The fund was created to back early-stage “deep technology” companies whose prospects depend on substantial engineering, research, and intellectual property. Its areas of interest have included semiconductors, sensors, artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, and digital health.

Grove announced $110 million in commitments in October 2017, exceeding the original target for its first fund. A second fund closed with $120 million in commitments in 2020. By investing at the seed stage, Moran and his colleagues could contribute not only capital but also experience in product design, intellectual-property strategy, team building, fundraising, and entry into international markets.

Companies in which Moran invested or which he helped launch have included Consumer Physics, developer of a miniature spectrometer for analyzing materials; Sensible Medical, which developed technology for monitoring lung fluid; GlucoMe, creator of connected diabetes-monitoring tools; Geneformics, which worked on computing infrastructure for genomic data; and RapidAPI, a platform for application programming interfaces. These examples show how experience first gained in storage and hardware was redirected toward medical, scientific, and industrial uses.

Mentor, lecturer, and author

Moran has devoted a substantial part of his career to advising entrepreneurs. He has lectured at schools and universities, mentored founders through entrepreneurship programs, and participated in initiatives associated with institutions including the Technion, the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, and Shenkar. His public teaching presents entrepreneurship not as an uninterrupted sequence of victories, but as a process of experimentation, mistakes, resilience, and the continual search for another route forward.

That perspective carries particular weight because it draws on both M-Systems’ extraordinary success and Modu’s much more difficult path. Rather than treating setbacks as material to conceal, Moran has used them to explain how founders can reassess assumptions, preserve useful knowledge, and continue building.

In 2016, Yedioth Books published 100 Doors: An Introduction to Entrepreneurship. Its 100 short chapters combine memories of Moran’s childhood and professional life with observations about creating companies, making decisions, and moving forward when one opportunity closes. In 2024, he published a second Hebrew book, Ye’adut: A Book About Music, Doors, and Life Itself, which develops his ideas about living with purpose and translating that sense of purpose into action.

His work as a mentor strengthens an important feature of Israel’s entrepreneurial culture: the transmission of practical knowledge between generations. Instead of leaving his experience inside one company, Moran has made it available to engineers, researchers, and first-time founders.

Professional recognition

Moran’s work has received recognition in Israel and abroad, particularly for its contribution to flash-memory storage systems:

  • In 2003, Ernst & Young named him Entrepreneur of the Year, and he received CEO of the Year recognition from IMC.
  • In 2007, the Israel Venture Association honored him as Israeli high-tech Entrepreneur of the Year.
  • In 2012, he received the Edward Rhein Technology Award for the invention of the USB flash drive. He donated the monetary award to the Technion.
  • In 2015, Moran, Amir Ban, and Simon Litsyn received the IEEE Reynold B. Johnson Information Storage Systems Award for pioneering contributions to flash-based storage systems.
  • In 2016, the Technion awarded him an honorary doctorate.
  • In 2018, he received a Netexplo Talent of the Year award at a ceremony held at UNESCO in Paris.

Why Dov Moran’s legacy belongs in Moreshet

Dov Moran belongs in Moreshet because his life connects Israeli social history with a technological achievement of worldwide consequence.
