Yaron Dekel

Israeli journalist, broadcaster and media leader whose work connected political reporting, public broadcasting and Jewish life in North America

A journalist at the center of public life

Yaron (Nachman) Dekel, born on July 19, 1964, is an Israeli journalist, broadcaster and media executive. Over more than three decades, he worked at the center of Israel’s public conversation: first as a young reporter at Galatz, later as a political correspondent and commentator, a current-affairs host, a Washington-based correspondent and the commander of Galatz. His work connected daily news with broader questions about politics, society, Israel–United States relations and the life of American Jewry.

Dekel became known for direct questioning, thorough reporting and a willingness to challenge people in positions of power. His contribution was therefore not limited to reporting events. He also examined how public institutions, elected leaders and the media itself should meet their responsibilities.

Beginning at Galatz

Dekel grew up in Kiryat Ono, the son of Hanna Yehudit and Yair Dekel, a longtime editor at Ma’ariv. He attended Nir Elementary School, the Shazar Middle School and Ben-Zvi High School, and served as a senior youth leader in the local Scouts troop. He completed his military service at Galatz, Israel’s Army Radio station, where his professional career began.

During his service he worked as a police and legal affairs reporter and later covered political parties. These beats placed him at the intersection of the state’s institutions, the justice system, the police and national politics. For seven years he presented a weekly political-parties segment on Galatz, receiving the station commander’s award in 1990 and 1993.

Over the course of his career, Dekel covered seven Knesset elections, from the elections for the 12th Knesset through those for the 18th, as well as the 2008 United States presidential election. This experience established him as a recognizable voice in Israeli political and election coverage.

Political reporting, current affairs and the United States

Dekel later served as a political correspondent and commentator on Evening News on Israel Educational Television and on Channel 2 during the channel’s early years. From the mid-1990s until his appointment as Galatz commander, he was a political correspondent for Kol Yisrael. He also hosted the current-affairs program Hakol Diburim and worked as a political commentator for Israel’s Channel One.

On Hakol Diburim, Dekel combined continuous news coverage with analysis, interviews and criticism of the conduct of public figures and institutions. The program’s witty, often satirical openings became part of his recognizable style. In interviews, he pressed guests to address the subject, provide clear answers and confront the gap between public declarations and actions.

From 2002 to 2007, Dekel served as Washington correspondent for Israel’s Channel One and Kol Yisrael. From the American capital he covered United States politics, elections and their impact on American–Israeli relations. He also produced in-depth reports on American Jews from a range of perspectives. This work gave Israeli audiences a closer view of political and communal life in North America and of the complex relationship between Israel and the Jewish communities abroad.

In 2008, he received the Sokolow Award for Electronic Journalism for his work as the Israel Broadcasting Authority’s correspondent in the United States. The award announcement highlighted his in-depth reports on American Jews, American politics, the influence of United States politics on Israel–United States relations and the American election campaign. It also praised the depth, reliability and professional independence of his political and diplomatic reporting.

Commander of Galatz

On March 4, 2012, Dekel became commander of Galatz after leaving the Israel Broadcasting Authority. He served until August 31, 2017. During his tenure, he introduced changes to the station’s news format. Among them, scheduled news editions were replaced by short bulletins at the top of the hour, incorporating recorded voices from the field and opening with the phrase “With what is happening now.”

The changes reflected his effort to adapt news broadcasting to the speed of events and to the way audiences consume information in real time. As commander, he was responsible not only for individual programs but also for the institutional work of a major public-service and military radio station that reaches broad segments of Israeli society and provides a platform for journalists, commentators and voices from the field.

Dekel completed his term on August 31, 2017, and was succeeded by Shimon Elkabetz. His tenure brought the perspective of an experienced field reporter and political commentator to the leadership of one of Israel’s most influential news and current-affairs broadcasters.

Public broadcasting and documentary work

At the beginning of 2019, Israel’s public broadcaster announced that Dekel would join it as host of The Week with Yaron Dekel. The program Dekel-Segal, which he had presented with Amit Segal, also moved to the corporation and was renamed Dekel-Winson; it was broadcast on Thursday mornings.

Dekel also created the documentary series The Israelies, about Israelis who emigrated to North America. The series approached migration not simply as a change of location, but as a transformation involving identity, family life and relationships with Israeli society. In the context of North American Jewish life, it brought viewers stories of Israelis living within a different Jewish, cultural and social environment from the one they had known in Israel.

In May 2021, Dekel announced that he would leave the public broadcaster to begin an assignment in Canada on behalf of the Jewish Agency for Israel. According to the material supplied to the archive, he has served as the Jewish Agency’s representative in Canada since then. The assignment continues a thread running through his journalism and public work: strengthening understanding between Israel and Jewish communities in North America.

Education and personal life

Dekel earned undergraduate degrees in criminology and political science from Bar-Ilan University and completed a master’s degree with distinction there in communications and political science. In 1993, he studied at the World Press Institute in Minnesota, and in 1996 he pursued further study at the University of Oxford in Britain. He is the father of a daughter and lives in Tel Aviv.

Why Yaron Dekel’s legacy belongs in Moreshet

Yaron Dekel merits inclusion in Moreshet because his career unfolded across the places where journalism, public service, Israeli identity and Jewish life in the Diaspora meet. He covered elections and government institutions, questioned decision-makers, led a major radio station, documented Israelis living in North America and represented the Jewish Agency in Canada.

His legacy is not confined to a single position or award. It is found in a substantial body of broadcasts, reports, interviews and documentary work that made complex public issues accessible to Israeli audiences and helped illuminate both Israeli society and its relationship with Jews around the world. For that reason, Moreshet.com preserves his story as part of the history of Israeli media and the wider story of the relationship between the State of Israel and Jewish communities in North America.
