Carl Laemmle

Carl Laemmle, one of the founders of Universal Studios, played a key role in the early film industry, founding Universal Film Manufacturing Company. He is also noted for his humanitarian efforts, particularly his work in helping Jews escape Nazi Germany, including his attempts to assist those on the MS St. Louis, a ship carrying refugees denied entry into Cuba, the U.S., and Canada. (January 17, 1867 – September 24, 1939)
